When Sam Calagione moved to Delaware in 1995 to start Dogfish Head Brewery (at the time, the state’s only brewery), he discovered a local secret: 3,500 acres of windblown salt marsh, drifting dunes, and sandy-pine beaches wedged between the fishing piers of Lewes and the frat-house bars of Dewey Beach. “You can fall asleep behind the dunes listening to waves crash on the beach,” says Calagione. And when all that solitude gets to you, it’s a quick ride to the Starboard on the water in Dewey Beach, where D.C. power interns do shots with sorority girls. On Sundays, says Calagione, “the best thing for a hangover is their DIY Bloody Mary bar.”
